How do you set an variable that can be changed via a trigger command?

what i want to do is in my main world i can control the target mobs name through a simple say command.

eg.
world 1: say mob is knight
world 2: (upon hearing that trigger sets target is knight)

so when world 1 attacks, trigger for world two attack designated mob.

i have set up a trigger referencing this variables in the variable tabs as "target" and i can access this target though a trigger line:
kill @target

but how can i change it using a trigger?
thanks, hope that makes sense.

hmm i thnk i got it after watching this :
