It appears that MUSHclient is now more popular since being made Freeware (as you would expect).

Based on the number of downloads of MUSHclient.xxx.exe (where xxx is the version), I extracted the following figures from the web site statistics:

  • March 2007 - 2,846 downloads of version 3.78 (shareware)
  • April 2007 - 1,802 downloads of version 4.01, and 1,269 downloads of version 4.02 (freeware) (total of 3,071 downloads)
  • May 2007 - 3,679 downloads of version 4.02 (freeware)

Also, a number of people have generously made a donation via PayPal to support MUSHclient. You know who you are - thank you.

The fact that people are prepared to pay to support software, without nag screens, crippleware, copy protection, or any other form of coercion, demonstrates how the Open Source software movement works.

Interestingly, a small number (around 70) have also downloaded the source to MUSHclient, so there must be people who are delving into the workings of it.

So far there haven't been any postings on the forum about "why did you do it this way, rather than that way?" - but perhaps that will come later.
