How far off is a version that works properly for Vista? :-)

Has Vista been released? I don't have a copy yet so it is hard to make it work for something I don't have.

I believe so, atleast I got it through my university.

But it doesn't seem to do any harm.
Another small question.. I'm using SVN on my MushClient folder (source control) to share up-to-date settings between different computers.. However, global preferences does not seem to be in a file somewhere - are these saved in registry?

In fairness, most universities have MSDN-AA memberships and have "prerelease" access to everything in the MS pipeline except Office components.
The US consumer release for Vista keeps getting pushed back and I personally believe the business release was premature. Anyone that's not in college or working for a business that can afford to work with bleeding edge tech is unlikely (at best) to have Vista yet unless they're crazy enough to trust a MS beta release (again, US only due to export laws and such).
Nick being in Australia is likely to be 6 months or more behind the US consumer release in seeing Vista available locally.

I don't feel strongly motivated to support something that is not yet generally released, and for which I may not even be able to obtain a copy for 6 months.

Yes, they are. You could conceivably write some sort of tool that converts that registry key to a file (eg. export it with RegEdit) and then keep a copy of that in SVN.

I think your only issue is converting the help system though, but I can work around it - will post on the forum if I figure out where to download the WinHelp application.. Apparently it's mentioned in a lot of places, but no downloads are available. But if all other fails I'll try to move it from XP and experiment.

According to what I last saw, Vista won't be available to the general public until January 30, 2007. But IMO that doesn't mean people won't still be using a Microsoft beta :P We all know they don't tend to TRULY fix their software until at least SP2.
Personally I'm going to be avoiding Vista like the plague it is and stick with XP as long as I can, and then decide on my options once XP is no longer viable for me. I can't see any reason to want it. The Aero 3D stuff just isn't enough and they haven't really done much else to it from what I've been reading. Other than locking the thing down tighter than Fort Knox so the user no longer has any rights to anything.
