Is economy.txt in the system dir needed? I'd like to take it out because it seems useless, but since the shops use an economy system, I'm not sure if it requires that file.

I suppose you could always grep the source for economy.txt and see where it's used... :-)
Can't answer your question off-hand, though, because the MUD I run was based off of SMAUG 1.0 many years ago ... don't have an economy.txt file to begin with.

You can remove references to the file. So far as I was able to tell it never actually got used for anything. Smaug has alot of that kind of thing.
