Okay, quick question. I downloaded the win32 smaug server from this site, and I was wondering if there was anyway to edit the initial intro screens without having to get an uncompiled version and edit the source code itself. If I do need to get an uncompiled version, how much of a pain is it going to be for me to edit those initial screens (the main login prompt and the spectral gates authorization thing...)

The initial prompt is in the help.are file, try searching that. I'm sure this has been answered before, try the SMAUG FAQ on this site.
The spectral gates message I think would be in the spectral gates area.
I did find the initial screen, but I still can't find the spectral gates....The initial screen was in the faq, it's under Greeting in help.are, but the spectral gates message wasn't mentioned. I'll keep looking.
Whats the message that you want to get rid of? The new player MOTD? That would be the help file "NMOTD". Or the gates, is an area.
The message I would like to change is the message new players get right after they choose their race. It begins:
[=] Feburary 1998 the Ill Month [=]
"You will begin at the Spectral Gates, an area to explore while awaiting authorization. You will pass into the Realms at this areas end."
It then talks about consulting your guide for various things...then ends...
... And in the time which passed, great tumult and misery was wreaked upon the stronghold of Darkhaven by the dark gods, and much change visited upon the carnage which remained by the gods of light ...
