Couple of bugs running SMAUG

I've been compiling SMAUG with VC++ 6.0 and running it on Windows ME (yes, yes, I know. I'm going to change to Win2k or WinNT soon). So far things have been going fine, but when I reconnect to it through telnet, I get the following message:

EOF encountered on read.

I would think it was harmless, but occasionally when I reconnect the MUD will crash. If I'm lucky, I'll get Window's blue screen of death and either Zmud or SMAUG will go down. If not, the entire screen will go black, the computer will freeze, and I'll have to rip out the power-plug in order to restart it. Any ideas how this can be fixed?

Another problem that I've been having is if I'm running my MUD and my ISP goes down (it does this to me every 4 hours), I won't be able to reconnect. When I try to dial-up, it will tell me the modem isn't responding. When I do some modem diagnostic type things, it will tell me that the com-port is already in use. This only happens if I'm running the MUD while the ISP disconnects me. Occasionally a similar problem will occur when the MUD crashes for the reason stated aboved. My modem will just stop responding. Any ideas how this can be fixed?

These "it crashes occasionally" bugs are the hardest to find. :)

Unfortunately, Windows 95/98/ME tends to be less robust.

I would try one thing, try using my client program (MUSHclient) rather than zMUD, just to rule out the possibility that the client is somehow doing it.
